Fire on the Mountain | Mount Superior- Little Cotton Wood Canyon, Utah
Monday, December 13th, 2010Mount Superior is one of my favorite peaks to shoot in the Wasatch. I usually spent most of my season in Little Cotton Wood Canyon so over the past couple of years I have stacked up quite a few great images of this mountain. This particular day I had hiked up Grizzly Gulch mid afternoon to scope and shoot some tree ollies. After spending a couple of hours building a feature and shooting it we ended up closing down the Gulch right as this show was starting. Utah has some pretty killer sunsets and I was glad to have ended my day with this one!

Slayer | Salt Lake City Utah – Maverik Center
Monday, December 6th, 2010Typical working Americans can expect some type of yearly bonus for their hardworking efforts slaving away countless hours stuffed in a cubical behind a desk. Thankfully my cubical is outside in the snow I’m usually sitting behind a camera. Well we put in a lot of hard work, had a great season and I got my bonus – tickets and a media pass to Slayer!!! The whole Levitation crew kicked off the 10/11 season at the Maverik center in Salt Lake for Slayer’s American Carnage Tour!
Last time I shot a concert was back in high-school for a couple local punk and metal bands. This was the first concert I had shot since then and in the Heavy Metal world it doesn’t get any better than Slayer! High production metal concert photography is pretty crazy. Dealing with intense constantly changing split second lighting, band members running around headbanging while trying to dodge security and crazy fans flying over the barricade you really need to have a plan. Myself and a few other photographers were lined up backstage and once the curtain dropped it was a mad house. Everybody was running into the photo pit and started full rapid fire with the constraints of only being able to shoot the first three songs. I primarily shot wide open with fairly high ISO switching between 15mm fish-eye, 24-70 and 70-200 lenses. I tried to focus on each member with every lens combination from different angles to have an over all cohesive collection of shots from the show. Those fast 15 mins were such an adrenaline rush mixed with pure chaos I can not wait to get the chance to shoot something like this again! Thanks to Nico Nolan, Kevin Kirk @ the Heavy Metal Shop and Slayer for such a rad night!
Kevin Kirk – Heavy Metal Shop | Salt Lake City, Utah
Wednesday, November 17th, 2010Had a chance for a quick portrait session with Heavy Metal Shop owner Kevin Kirk this past October. Slayer was in town and he was a huge help getting us the right passes to shoot the show! (More on that soon!!) Kevin is a rad guy and has been posted up in SLC peddlin evil for the past 20 years! Thanks again!
Fall in Little Cottonwood Canyon Utah
Saturday, October 23rd, 2010The late fall in Utah has been absolutely amazing. It seemed like it took the colors a minute to start creeping down the canyons but now in late October they are ripping full bore. I tend to not bring my full camera set up with me during most of the fall since I tend to focus on climbing. After looking at the upcoming forecast of straight heavy snow I knew I need to take a drive and catch some of the colors before they were all gone. I’m glad I did because four days later I was hiking chest deep powder just up the road. More on that soon!

The Angler | Left Fork Riverside Boulders – Joes Valley Utah
Friday, October 15th, 2010New Joes | Joes Valley Utah
Friday, October 15th, 2010Wow, what an amazing zone. I had such a good time climbing I didn’t even bother to shot anything in this area but a few quick snaps on the way out. So happy to call Salt Lake my home with so many amazing spots like this so close by. This by far is one of the best bouldering areas to shred your fingertips in Utah! Definitely worth the trip out to the middle of nowhere. Free camping, solid sandstone, hundreds of quality problems, great landings and a river to jump in. What more could you ask for!
