We also were able to catch a few pipe laps with Ty Emond before had take his kids back to shred school. Kind of a lazy day but the crew milked it for a couple of hours and then called it a wrap.

The UAC & Snowbird Freeride Avalanche Summit
January 1, 2010 | Filed Under NEWS, PHOTOS, WEEKLY VISUAL | 1 Comment
This past December I had the chance to take the Utah Avalanche Center & Snowbird Free Ride Avalanche Summit. The two day course was geared towards advanced and professional riders looking to refresh or soak up some very valuable avey knowledge taught by some of best forecasters guides and pro riders in the nation. I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the course and can only help spread the awareness and encourage any one who already travels in the back country or is thinking about riding out of bounds to take a avey course or read up on avalanches because having a beacon, shovel and probe doesn’t mean shit. You need to know how to use these tools and understand the terrain your traveling in as well as being able to recognized all the red flags. This knowledge can save your life as well as your homies. Check out tons more photos and words over at LEVITATION.

Alaskan Highway View Near Destruction Bay Yukon
December 7, 2009 | Filed Under PHOTOS, WEEKLY VISUAL | 1 Comment
Not sure what this mountain range is called but its part of the Kluane National Park Reserve near the small town of Destruction Bay in the Yukon Territory. This was taken early morning after an all night rally at about mile 2700 of our 3035 mile journey from Salt Lake to Valdez Alaska. During this trip I was amazed at the all mountain ranges we saw and always wondered if any one had even tapped into half of the ones we passed by. I defiantly was scoping out any possible lines imagining what it would be like the shred them.

Mount Sneffels Summit Colorado
August 24, 2009 | Filed Under PHOTOS, TRIPS, WEEKLY VISUAL | Leave a Comment
One of Colorado’s most prominent fourteen thousand foot peaks, Mount Sneffels is located in the northern San Juan’s just out side of Ouray. I have been coming here almost every summer since I was born. There is something about these mountains that capture you the moment your in their midst. These peaks give off such a strong positive energy its hard not to love being around and on top of them. This past month I visited the 14,150 ft summit of Sneffels for the second time making sure to capture the amazing views on the way up and down.

MEMORY BANK; I will be digging through my archives finding old favorites or photos that have never been seen or used to be published here for you to check out every Wednesday.
Date: May 10th 2008
Rider: Pat Moore
Location: Snowboarder Superpark 12: The Son of Berserker – Mammoth, California.
The 2008 Superpark 12 at Mammoth was another first for me. I remember back in middle school the first time I had read about Superpark in Snowboarder mag in particular the photo sequence of Travis Rice doing an insane 100 + foot rodeo. I remember studying all the photos as well reading the funny stories about Bridges rolling around on a sled shooting poachers with a paintball gun. Well I had finally gotten my chance to come to Superpark, not to ride as I had imaged when I was younger but to help document everything that went down. Day one was pretty chaotic but after each day and each bigger feature opened most riders were weeded out while only the best and gnarliest were left standing. One of the main standouts being Pat Moore. This wasn’t a surprise after his showings from the last couple of Superparks, he sure knows how to leave his mark. This year was no exception expect I was able to witness it first hand. He killed it and here’s the proof.
You can find all the insane heli footage from Superpark compiled into a mini edit in the bonus features of That’s it That’s All.

Here’s a few snaps of Lonnie Kauk sending Wicked Bender 5.13b this past weekend in Echo Canyon Utah. He almost on- sighted this beast managing to red point the route second attempt. The dry wall at Echo offers some interesting afternoon climbing on embedded cobble stone right off the I-80. Just hope a train doesn’t roll by when your at a crux… this place is pretty damn noisy.
All photos shot with a canon G10.

MEMORY BANK – Gigi Ruf Natural Selection 2008

MEMORY BANK; I will be digging through my archives finding old favorites or photos that have never been seen or used to be published here for you to check out every Wednesday.
Date: February 2nd 2008
Rider: Gigi Ruf
Location: Quiksilver Natural Selection – Dicks Ditch, Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Every time I look at this particular shot it always brings me right back to that cold, dark, misty day in Dicks Ditch. This was my first trip to Jackson and it could not have been at a better time. For one Travis Rice had hand picked 17 of the worlds best freestyle riders to come to Jackson for a all natural new approach to a big mountain freestyle contest. Everyone was posted up for a seven day window competing on only the best two days. To top it off both selected zones on the mountain had been closed off a week or so prior letting mother nature blanket over three feet of snow on top of another 2 during the week.
If I remember correctly Gigi was probably the 4 or 5 rider to test his luck on day one in the buried course down the popular Dicks Ditch run. The course had around ten packed lips scattered down the gully with each landing having a nice fluffy cushion of about 3 – 4ft of deeep pow. As you can see it was pretty white out conditions with those three black specks on the right photo serving for a lip marker. After his first hit Gigi had a bit of trouble getting a ton of speed through the sea of untracked snow opting for a classic method disappearing into a whiteout through the nipple deep landing. These two photos combined were my favorite shots from the trip.

Sugarhouse Park Firework Show 2009
July 5, 2009 | Filed Under PHOTOS | 3 Comments
I have never had the chance to catch any good firework shows without having to drive a long way, deal with insane parking and paying for tickets. Luckily this being my first year I have spent the 4th of July in Salt Lake we had a killer show right in our backyard. Armed with my Canon G10 and a table tripod we took a five minute walk down to Sugarhouse park, found a spot on the grass and enjoyed a rad show.

Just recently started broadening my climbing range rising above the Salt Lake Valley heat tramp one hour east to the high Uinta National Forrest. The cool, comfortable afternoon climbing temps at 10,000ft were perfect for sending allowing both Jamieson Stuart and myself to put a few more solid routes under our belts. Ruth Lake and the Good Medicine Wall immediately filled my top spot for crags I have climbed on so far. Here’s a few snaps from this past weekend stay tuned for lots more from this beautiful place.

Injured Riders Foundation Donation
June 15, 2009 | Filed Under NEWS, PHOTOS | Leave a Comment
This past season I donated some photos to the Injured Riders Foundation. This foundation was started by SNOWREV founder Johnny Centi after experiencing a serious back injury. Having no health insurance and no extra funds for surgery while dealing with our countries ridiculous health care system various health insurance providers showed no support or help for his situation. After going through all this he wanted to show support and help people who have hurt themselves participating in action sports like snowboarding, skateboarding, climbing and surfing.
I have been involved with SNOWREV and worked closely with Johnny since 2006, remembering back then he was always talking about starting this foundation. I’m stoked for Johnny and to finally see the IRF picking up speed launching a new site and recently receiving the 501(c)(3) status ableing them to start accepting tax deductible donations.
I know the IRF will really change riders lives having almost been in a situation were I would have needed help like this. In 2006 I severely blew my knee out snowboarding having to have major surgery and extensive physical therapy. For the whole season of 05/06 I was snowboarding, skateboarding and snowmobiling with out health insurance and luckily a WEEK before I blew out my knee I had signed up to be covered. Waiting to sign up a week later I would have found my self with over $50,000 in medical bills. This is great foundation and I’m glad to be contributing even if its only my photos. Stop by read the stories and find out more info on how you can be involved.

Thompson Pass After Dark
June 10, 2009 | Filed Under PHOTOS, WEEKLY VISUAL | Leave a Comment
I found my self shooting a lot of long exposures during our many nights staying on Thompson Pass, Alaska. On the clear nights the stars were out in full force and the mountains stood tall glowing under the moonlight creating an amazing luminous frozen landscape. Despite the cold I would try and stay out as long as I could shooting and waiting for a chance to capture the Northern Lights but mother nature decided against giving me the famous show, which was a bummer. Unfortunately not having a remote trigger or a timer remote controller I was left with my in camera 30 second exposure. Although I wasn’t able to get some really long exposures I was happy with what I was able to get under the time limit circumstances. Below are just a couple of my favorites from the trip including the first photo set of multiple self portraits taken around the ABA base camp where I popped myself with my g10. Second photo is of the Moon rising over The Books Mtn Range and the third photo a panoramic shot of ABA base camp under a full moon.

All Roads Lead To: Valdez Alaska
June 8, 2009 | Filed Under NEWS, PHOTOS, TRIPS, VIDEOS | Leave a Comment
Going up to Alaska for 14 days this past April was definitely the highlight of my season. Valdez and Thompson pass has to be one of the most amazing places I have ever been. The things I learned and experiences I had blew away any thing else I have ever done in my 13 years of snowboarding. My only regrets being not snowboarding as much as I would have liked and not being able riding a true AK line for myself. But every one I shot sure got some and more. I was stoked to just watch, shoot and have the chance to be in this incredible place. Hopefully someday I will make it up there again!
We broke the trip in to two featured stories. Part One being all snowmobile accessed zones on Thompson Pass and Part Two being all zones accessed by a heli. Click below to check out my photo galleries and the very smooth edit by Mark Dangler from the SNOWREV AK trip.
